50 yard lineOur town is gearing up for the NCAA Division 1 Football Championship game. It is tomorrow night and will host the Appalachian State Mountaineers for the third year in a row. It is quite an exciting thing for our city.

In years past I have gone with Damon but this year we were unable to secure tickets at a reasonable price. This year we will just go to the pavillion and walk around, people watching and tailgating.

Tonight we went to the stadium to watch the Golden Knights do their practice jump for tomorrow night’s festivities. People are invited to walk around on the field. Some folks even brought footballs to play around on the big field.

Funny story about tonight’s fun and picture taking- my camera kept quitting on my because I needed new batteries. I usually have a second set with me, but for some reason tonight I was without. Batteries keep getting mentioned in my life, so I submit this small PSA: in the upcoming holiday celebrations, even local football games, make sure you have extra batteries or a second charged batteries.

Brunch for DinnerI’m a day late with this one, but I did take the picture yesterday.

The mom’s group at church met for a Christmas brunch. I took a basic quiche (cheese and sausage) and it was very good. There was left over and Damon decided to have some for dinner, saving me from cooking last night. What you see here is what was left after dinner. And I think it might become my lunch today.

I didn’t post it last night because I got a little depressed and over stimulated from the laptop yesterday. Too many digital projects and one didn’t go in the right way. I am trying to decide what step to go in next, but last night I was too upset to deal. Today is a new day. Let’s see what it holds, hopefully some answers.

title pic Christmas TV Specials: my grown up Christmas list

Posted by Alli on

There is a Christmas tradition I just don’t get into as much as other people seem to- the Christmas TV specials. I am specifically thinking about the animated Christmas stories like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer or Santa Claus is Coming to Town. My husband once said he would get so excited when the Christmas specials would come on TV because it meant he got to stay up later and Christmas was coming really soon.

A friend of mine was reminiscing about her favorite Christmas specials and all I could come up with were movies, not TV specials. But then I remembered we did have some TV specials, just not the same ones every one is familiar with.

When I was growing up I remember my mom taping a ton of PBS TV specials for us to watch throughout the season. There was an Australian movie I can’t recall the title of. And Silent Mouse, about how a mouse is the one who wrote Silent Night and it was played on a guitar since the church organ was broken (due to the mouse chewing the bellows). We often watched “A Child’s Christmas in Wales” dreaming afterwards of snowy Christmases. I miss watching “A Christmas Memory,” but NOT the version with Patty Duke. I want the one with Geraldine Page.

Now that I am older I really don’t crave the fluffy Christmas stories about Santa saving a child’s parent’s marriage or a reindeer with an acne problem. Instead, I have been enjoying all the Christmas specials found on HGTV and Seasons Eatings on the Food Network. The food network chefs have been cooking up special holiday fare and the competitions are such fun to watch!

On Sunday I sat and watched the National Gingerbread House Competition, oohing and ahhing over the confection creations. I got sad when pieces broke, and upset that little kid won the youth division.

This weekend I am excitedly anticipating watching HGTV’s specials on the White House Christmas and Store Window Displays. I don’t know why, but those specials are what get me in the holiday spirit. I’ll leave Snoopy and the gang to the kids.

Group shotFuller and I had some fun with friends today. Two of my college roommates and their kids joined us in breaking in our brand new aquarium membership.

When Fuller and I arrived at the meeting spot Esther asked me if I had my camera. I just laughed at her. Of course I had my camera! She and Heather had both forgotten theirs, so I was designated official photographer. Which is fine because I would have appointed myself that anyway, LOL!

I took a lot of pictures, but this group shot (which is really getting set up for this one) is what I pick for today. We had an excellent time and I hope my friends think the pictures I picked out for the flickr set are good enough for them.

The Big GiftI almost became on of those Moms today.

I was basking in my delight of having finished my Christmas shopping when it hit me- I never ordered Fuller’s “big gift.” The Fisher-Price Smart Cycle. It was something we have discussed for many months and finally decided the price was ok, so we would get it for Fuller for Christmas. Last week it was on Amazon for a really low price for like 5 minutes. A special deal for about 5 of them, and I missed it. So I said, “I’ll order it from Wal-Mart, site to store, and we get an ebates rebate.” Except I never ordered it.

I went to Wal-Mart this morning and noticed there were none to be bought. I went home, checked on line and the Amazon price had skyrocketed, Wal-Mart was out of stock, and the cost for shipping one from Toys R Us was too much. So I called the local Toys R Us stores and one had them in stock.

I still went to some other stores that were closer, but ended up having to go to the store that was the farthest away to get my kid the “hot ticket” item for Christmas. When we decided to get Fuller the Smart Cycle, we never knew it would be the gift to give this season. I usually turn my nose up at those kinds of marketing strategies. But if stores are selling out of them and Amazon is taking advantage by pushing up the price, it might end up being a big deal.

As we were driving out to the last store today I told myself, if they don’t have it, they don’t have it and we will wait until after Christmas vacation. But there they were, right at the front of the store. I never want to get a situation where I am getting an ulcer over buying a certain gift for my son… and I am worried that today I might have come close. Next time, I just need to order the silly thing. Before other parents get the same idea.
