Best Shot Monday: Lesson in Action

Oops. On Friday I think I set myself up. By sharing the shots I wanted to capture at the Auburn A Game, I couldn’t help but keep thinking “did I get it? Did I get my Best Shot?” And while we were sitting in the sun, with my sunglasses pulled halfway down my face and my visor pushed up so not to get in the way of the lens, I kept getting discouraged and annoyed.

Problems:
1) We sat really close, so a lot of the pictures have random sideline standers blocking the action.
2) While I have a great camera with an awesome zoom, I needed a bit more camera to get the action I really desired.

But, I don’t think the experience was really a wash. As the game was starting, I told someone, “I think I was a sports photographer in another life.” I was able to practice the following:

1) Patience.
2) Anticipation.
3) Knowing missing some key shots was ok.

After looking through my photoset 50 or more times, I decided none of the SOOC shots were best shot material. Which is why I am a big fan of postprocessing. Once I just cropped the picture, I felt a lot better.

Pushing through

If anything, I am more determined to get the money for my DSLR before Football season in August. (I would love a telephoto lens too, but I’ll just put it on my wishlist.)

I would never know what to even aim for at a football game, but this shot came out really great! I’ve got DSLR wishes myself, but they’re a long, long way off.

Good for you for waiting for a good shot, and then processing it to make it even better. Your patience was rewarded!

it took me a while to get decent/good at action (sports) photography. I learned through fire shooting Covt. soccer - having never shot a sporting event, nor seen a game of soccer I was pretty much horrible for the first two matches (though I did have some steller sidelines shots).

Once you know the sport better you learn to anticipate shots and get a feel for the pace of the game. This helps you pan better and grab those intense action scenes.
