Top Secret Tuesday: My superpower hurts
My husband and son think I have a super power: I can find anything*. At least, it seems that way. I find most missing items in the house and know where to find many items outside the house relating to my family.
I’m not sure how I got this super power. It wasn’t like I was bitten by a spider or involved in some radioactive accident. Maybe it was my wedding vows, sealed with the husband and wife kiss that did it. Or the cake at our reception was laced with some power inducing drug. Really, I guess it doesn’t matter because it isn’t how I got it, but how I use it. With great power comes great responsibility, right?
I must admit I do sometimes get upset with responsibility of my power, wishing my son (or husband) would not rely so heavily on me to find slippers, medicine, or papers they need. I have to remember what may seem so simple to me is actually difficult for those without this great gift.
But there are times when my superpower fails me and suddenly I am turning the house upside down to find something. Usually it is something that I need, which makes it even more frustrating. And when I can’t find something, even after moving furniture, pawing through clutter, and emptying drawers- I feel a real physical pain. It is really uncomfortable, like I can’t sit still until I find what I need. I don’t know how Superman gets through his bouts with kryptonite, but I imagine we feel the same paralyzing pain. In my case, I am paralyzed from doing anything until what I seek is found.
I do have unsolved cases, like the one I was dealing with yesterday. The case of the missing receipt. I still have an uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach about it but I finally had to wash my hands of it and appreciate my very clean bedroom.
No one said my superpower was perfect. But it does put me in a very special position in the house. I hope I can pass it down to my children.
*To my parents and sisters: the superpower is finding things. The Christmas tree incident is an exception because I wasn’t looking for it and was before my wedding day.

Before your wedding day? We lived in NY then, didn’t we? I too have the power to find most things. But when I can’t it drives me crazy, I can’t be still until I find whatever it is. I hate not being able to find things.

@Courtney- the Christmas tree thing happened when I was in ninth grade and walked by the Christmas tree 3 or 4 times before having to be shown that it actually existed. My family still makes fun of me for that.

@S-G, maybe it is a genetic abnormality. Or mutation. But you know my pain… I have to find the missing object!

I have it too! Tim frequently calls on me to use it although he rarely admits it to be a super power. Maybe that will be a topic of discussion when he gets home from this trip.
I totally understand the pain too. I had something important go missing last June. I searched and searched. Finally gave up. It did turn up around New Years. I’m not sure how it got to where I found it in my desk. Worse pain was when I couldn’t find my passport for about 48 hrs. Talk about excessive/obsessive searching. That one took extra prayer for extra super power to find it.
