Best Shot Monday: Go Courtney, Go!

Last week I was honored to be in Fort Christmas, Florida (outside of Orlando) to watch my friend Courtney start and finish her fourth Tour de Cure ride. I had a responsibility while I was there to document the ride via digital photographs, so I took a lot of pictures.

After the ride we went back to the hotel for Courtney to clean up (she said it was a good thing I couldn’t smell anything due to my sinus infection). While Courtney was in the shower, I dumped the pictures from my camera to the laptop and this is the one that jumped out at me:

Go Courtney, Go!

I love how Courtney is bright and in focus, and the fog helped put the spectators in a faux depth of field mask. The jersey she was wearing was from the first Red Riders ride (cyclist participating who actually have diabetes) and it really helped me keep my eye on her.

It is a good picture. But I had to play around with it. And this is what I came up with:

Our girl Courtney!

I did all the post processing in picnik, just because it is really quick and easy to click “edit photo” on flickr and then save it again directly into flickr. First I boosted the color, then did a Lomoish action, and finally the B&W Focal action. I really wanted to hone in on Courtney. But now, I am not so keen on it.

So, I messed around some more. And this is my best shot:

Go Courtney, Go!

The color boost and Ortonish action gave me more of the pop and action I wanted in the picture.

Head on over to Tracey’s blog for more Best Shot Monday pictures.

I’ve mentioned before how I think picnik is a poor man’s photoshop and I love, love, love it. I have two 3 month premium memberships to give away and if you leave a comment you will be in the running to win one of them. And since I think 3 months isn’t too long, one other person will win a full year’s premium membership to picnik, paid for by me. So, comment away! Comments will close at 8 p.m. EST. I’ll post the winner tonight.

I actually like that first one. She’s sharp against the blur and the red pops. But picnik is so easy to use.

I love that shot, Alli! The fog made it just perfect!!

  3. Drew Says:

I have not used picnik but if it can do amazing things like it did with your photos of Courtney than that program is pretty cool. I’d love to see a shot where only Courtney is in color, I’m not sure you can do that in picnik though.

I love it when you get an effect that you weren’t even really trying for and it comes out so great like that! I’ve never use piknik but I always heard good things about it. I don’t have photoshop either, so maybe I should go check it out.

That is weird how the first picture, the subject you wanted to be clear and stand out really did. The first picture is the best. I’m glad you had a blast down in Orlando.
