Having a Boo Radley moment, are we?

Tonight’s entertainment has been Pushing Daisies. We love that show and make it a point to watch it.
But tonight I also got a treat in the commercials for the upcoming movie Sweeney Todd. Pushing Daisies has a Tim Burton kind of feel, and Tim Burton directed Sweeney Todd, so I guess it makes sense. My only knowledge of the movie is the excerpt that was performed in Jersey Girl. I know it has something to do with murder and putting humans into pies… beyond that I guess I have to visit the official Sweeney Todd movie site.
When I first saw the commercial I was excited to see Johnny Depp. The first time I recall seeing Mr. Depp in a movie and making the connection of who the actor was, as opposed to just the character, was in Benny and Joon. I love, love, love that movie (I heart Mary Stuart Masterson). I remember actually fighting with one of my sisters over who got to keep the VHS copy of the movie. I don’t have it here at my house, so I think I lost that one. (Good one for the Christmas list!)
I love the childlike character of Sam (Johnny Depp) and his love of Buster Keaton. The scene where he cleans the house, to the chagrin of Joon, just makes me smile. His antics in the park are fun and when he recognizes Ruthie in the diner (“Oh my God! I’ve just been looking for my boyfriend. Have you seen him? He’s a guy with a little mole on his right cheek. AH! Oh, Brad, Brad, please don’t be dead Brad. I never got a chance to tell you want you meant to me Oh, Brad, please! It’s you! You’re you! Ruthie Melony, co star of the Prom Queen Mutilator with Dick Bebe! “) it just adds a whole other dimension.
I love that movie.
Sure Johnny Depp has done other things… Pirates of the Carribean, Willy Wonka… but I preferred him in Finding Neverland (a movie I do own). His James Barrie character was so charming and heart warming. He encourages imagination from the very first time he meets the Davies boys (“Well, currently I make my living entertaining princes and their courts with my trained bear, Porthos.). I can’t help but cry at the end when all the little kids from the orphanage show up to see Peter Pan and again when Sylvia dies. Actually I can’t help but cry through much of the ending.
But when it comes down to it, I prefer Benny and Joon. I like the Buster Keaton shtick and his relationship with Joon. I look forward to seeing Sweeny Todd (and hearing Johnny sing!) if not to see Johnny Depp, but to see what the whole Sweeny Todd show is about… or I could visit Sweeney Todd on MySpace until the movie comes out.
