November 13, 2007 National Memory Screening Day
Posted by Alli on November 1, 2007
In September I spent a Saturday morning walking to support the local Alzheimer’s Association. I walked in memory of my Pop Pop who died after several years of struggle with the disease.
I told my Grandma I would be happy to walk with her the next time the walk is in Auburn. Unfortunately the upcoming walk is next week when I will be in Vegas. I do plan on penciling it in for next year though. I think it would be even more meaningful to walk with my Grandmother.
I know there have been more strides in the research of this disease and since November 13th is National Memory Screening Day, I want to encourage people to get a memory screening at the nearest location. You can find screening locations at www.nationalmemoryscreening.org (here in Chattanooga there are two locations, both KMart Pharmacies).
Early detection of Alzheimer’s is important. You want to make sure you get the proper care you need and understand what you can expect as the disease progresses. I was checking out the site and this one successful aging tip hit home:
Treat depression. Depressed elders have higher rates of dementia, lower quality of life and higher rates of death.
Since depression is something I battle with, I now have another reason why it is important to me to be well and of sound mind.

Kate said,
Thank you so much for doing this. My grandmother suffered from Alzheimer’s for about 15 years, an extremely long time to live with that disease. I have a deep fear that appears every so often that my mother will end up with it, sending us both into that pain again.
I had no idea that there was a National Memory Screening Day, so I will definitely look into it. Again, thanks for this post and taking action.
K.
