Listen to your mom and zip up your boots

Last week I was anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new boots. Yesterday the box in a big blue bag landed on my porch and I couldn’t wait to open it.
Well, maybe I did wait. It was about three hours until I finally opened it… there was so much going on. But once I opened the package, I immediately tried them on and I was immediately disappointed.
I ordered wide-shaft boots because I have wide calves. Being a cheerleader and playing tennis really bulked up my calf muscles when I was younger. Add on the years of weight and I am dealing with big calves. So to get boots labeled “wide shaft” and not being able to zip them up brought tears to my eyes. But! I didn’t cry, my BFF Esther was there and I just had to laugh.
I looked over the return notice and was dismayed to discover I would have to pay for the shipping back (unlike Zappos, but they didn’t have these boots) and added a run to the UPS store to my to-do list.
This morning my mom called and I told her how bummed I was these boots didn’t fit. The foot part was fine (and comfortable), but not being able to zip them up killed it for me. And then my mom turned it all around.
She explained something a shoe salesperson told her once- take the boot and zip it up as far as possible. Then scrunch the shaft down and zip it up some more. Keep scrunching and zipping until finished. The boots are scrunched (which my mom says looks better) but zipped! And since my boots are leather, they will stretch over time.
And once again, listening to my mom has paid off. I am currently wearing my new black boots, zipped all the way up! I am thrilled to finally have black boots. (And they only cost $52!) These babies are going to Vegas with me.

Ooh… good to know… I have large calves too, and have been thinking about ordering a pair of boots, but am afraid of them not fitting too. Where did you order yours from?

That’s fabulous advice. I can never find boots that fit my calves, and I don’t even think they are terribly big!
