title pic Working on my top ten

Posted by Alli on October 10, 2007

I’m waiting for the fall weather to take a definitive turn for the cooler so I can start the process of switching out the wardrobe. This is a task I hate, hate, hate and have to do it twice a year.

But this year I am a bit excited about it because of what is waiting for me in the attic. Last year my mom gave me money so I could buy almost a whole new wardrobe. At the time I was working, so the clothing choices were geared toward business casual, but there are some pieces I could wear in my time as a stay at home mom.

I have to admit when I bought those clothes, I wasn’t in a really good head space. I was excited about them, but it seemed as though I was trying to fix my unhappiness with clothes. This year I am in a much better head space and am really able to be excited about the way I look. And it helps that I will be taking a trip (by myself!) on my birthday this year, so I want to look my best.

I got hooked on Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style recently and have been interested in Tim’s top ten list, the ten items every woman should have in her closet:

1. Basic Black Dress
2. A Skirt
3. a day dress
4. Trench coat
5. Classic white shirt
6. Dress pants
7. Jeans
8. A sweatsuit alternative
9. A blazer
10. A sweater

When my mom gave me the money for clothes, she had a few requirements. She wanted me to get a blazer, a certain skirt, and a pair of boots. Thanks to her, I have the blazer and skirt from Tim’s list. (I’m still on the hunt for perfect boots.) Today I ordered a white shirt and black dress from Travel Smith. I’m not sure if the black dress would get past Tim Gunn (it is made of Supplex®-Lycra® knit so it might not be dressy enough), but it might be decent for the day dress.

I am confused what a sweatsuit alternative is. I don’t think it is golf apparel ladies, but maybe something velour or microsuede. I plan on checking out the thrift store for a trench coat, but I have to admit I have seen a few coats on the Travel Smith site that appeal to me.

It is nice to be in this place where I feel better about buying things for myself. And have Tim Gunn’s top ten has really helped me focus. Now for the weather to turn so I can move on the task I hate, I will be even happier.
