The fun people at MyWallSt.net have created the rookie challenge as a way to introduce folks to the ins and outs of buying and selling stocks on the stock market. It is a virtual world where you sign up (new registrants get a hat!), create a profile, and then through the rookie section you build a portfolio.
Your portfolio starts with $100,000.00 to virtually invest. The Rookie with the highest percent gain in their portfolio equity will be declared the winner of $1000 real dollars, which sounds very exciting. (Rookie winners also need to realize he/she will be required to submit to an interview, be part of a podcast, and write a blog post on his/ her profile on MyWallSt.net.)
The site seems like a really interesting way to learn about the stock market. If you are someone who already understands how it all works, you might be able to test your strategies before using your real money in the real world. I can see this website as a fun way to teach investment strategies to your children (though winners of the Rookie challenge must be over 18) as one way to discuss money management.
If you have the time or desire, I do suggest you spend some time on MyWallSt.net. You could learn something and even better, win something!
